EdUHK and UAEU Deepen Collaboration Hold Joint International Symposium

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) welcomed a delegation from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) to the Tai Po Campus on 24 April. Building on a high level meeting between the two universities in Dubai in February, the visit further strengthened their strategic partnership through in depth discussions and a Joint International Symposium.

The EdUHK representatives were led by President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, joined by Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung, Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Assistant Vice President (Research) Professor Michelle Gu Mingyue, Professor Lam Chak-fu at the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation, and Dr Deng Wenjing, Acting Head of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed progress since the February discussions in Dubai and explored collaboration in student mobility, joint supervision, curriculum development, and teacher training. The exchange laid a solid foundation for deeper and more systematic collaboration.

Following the meeting, the Joint International Symposium was convened, focusing on three themes: Artificial Intelligence and Education, Business Management, as well as Science and Environmental Studies. In his opening remarks, Professor Lee highlighted that the symposium as a new starting point for the partnership, with both universities ready to leverage their strengths for more impactful initiatives. Professor Al Raeesi noted that, coinciding with UAEU's 50th anniversary, the partnership has reached an opportunity for deeper engagement, and both universities will embark on a new chapter together.

Scholars from both universities shared their latest research and academic achievements, enhancing mutual understanding and identifying directions for future collaboration initially. The symposium showcased the complementary strengths of the two institutions, paving the way for resource integration and reaffirming their commitment to advancing international academic cooperation.

Since the establishment of the partnership in 2020, EdUHK and UAEU have launched dual-degree programmes, established a joint research fund, and promoted of student and faculty exchanges. Building on the outcomes of this symposium, the two universities will continue to integrate academic resources and professional expertise, jointly driving innovation in regional higher education.

🌍 New Study Uncovers Hidden Climate Impact of “Multi-Core” Black Carbon! 🔬🔥

Researchers at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) have contributed to a ground-breaking study, revealing that conventional theories on the structure of black carbon particles – such as those emitted by wildfires – may have significantly underestimated their impact on global climate systems.

cutoff

Traditionally, black carbon (BC) particles were represented as simple “core-shell” structure in global climate simulations, with a single carbon core located at the particle center surrounded by outer layers. However, an international inter-disciplinary research team, comprising scholars from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, and South Korea, has found that in long-range transported wildfire smoke, about one fifth (21%) of black carbon particles—especially those larger than 400nm in diameter, contain two or more cores. These “multi-core” aerosols, previously unaccounted for in global climate models, may hold the answer to the persistent underestimation of BC’s light absorption by approximately 50% compared to real-world measurements.

Dr Joseph Ching, Assistant Professor in the Department of Science and Environmental Studies at EdUHK, is part of that international research team led by Professor Weijun Li from the School of Earth Sciences at Zhejiang University. The collaboration also includes experts in atmospheric science, global climate modeling, electron microscopy, atmospheric environment, air pollution, and earth system science.

The findings were recently published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.

🔬 Groundbreaking Study on Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance Published in Advanced Science

We are pleased to announce that Dr Liguan Li from the Department of Science and Environmental Studies, in collaboration with the research group led by Prof. Tong Zhang of the University of Hong Kong, has published a new paper in Advanced Science titled "Highly Resolved Community Sewage Metagenomics Unveiling Landscape and Transmission Patterns of Antibiotic Resistome in Hong Kong Populations."

cutoff

The study conducted year-long metagenomic surveillance of sewage from 95 sites across Hong Kong, covering 4.8 million residents. Key findings include distinct seasonal patterns of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the superiority of community sewage over wastewater influent for reflecting human gut resistome. Long-read sequencing revealed diverse ARG hosts and potential transmission patterns, providing crucial insights for public health surveillance.

This research demonstrates our department's commitment to innovative, collaborative science addressing global health challenges.
