The field visit to the sustainable community in Tin Shui Wai engaged students in exploring Hong Kong's approaches to sustainable urban living, directly supporting SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Guided by the SES6020 instructor, students examined the community's environment, compared private residential estates and public housing, and explored the ecological significance of the adjacent wetland park.
Through this experiential learning, participants gained practical insights into fresh-water ecosystems (community outreach) and the importance of maintaining ecosystems and their biodiversity. The visit to the wetland park highlighted technologies towards aquatic ecosystem damage prevention and the need to address overfishing. Students also discussed how promoting conscious water usage in the wider community and cooperation on water security can support sustainable fisheries.
By linking urban development with ecological conservation, this field trip empowered future educators to integrate water management educational opportunities into their teaching and promote sustainable communities.
