The visit to Long Valley Nature Park, offered by the SES6020 course, provided students with a valuable outdoor learning opportunity that directly supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
Students explored Hong Kong's unique fresh-water ecosystems and their rich biodiversity, gaining first-hand insights into water management educational opportunities and the importance of cooperation on water security. Through the instructor's detailed explanations, outdoor birdwatching, and experiential learning, participants examined core issues such as bird conservation, habitat restoration, ecological agriculture, and community participation.
The visit also highlighted the significance of maintaining ecosystems and their biodiversity, particularly in wetland environments under threat. Students learned about technologies towards aquatic ecosystem damage prevention and discussed how promoting conscious water usage in the wider community can support sustainable fisheries and help address overfishing. By connecting classroom knowledge with real-world conservation efforts, this field trip empowered future educators to champion sustainable water and wetland management.
