IEM Summer Programme: Coastal Fieldwork Experience — Advancing SDG 6 & SDG 14 through Marine and Freshwater Conservation

Tai Po Campus and the marine/coastal environment in Hong Kong

On 18 July 2026, the “Coastal Fieldwork Experience” organised by the Department of Science and Environmental Studies at EdUHK was successfully held. The programme welcomed Secondary 4–5 students from various local schools to explore the Tai Po Campus and the marine/coastal environment in Hong Kong, gaining hands-on experience in environmental management fieldwork. This activity directly supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).

Through coastal ecosystem observation and recording, students gained practical insights into water management educational opportunities and the importance of cooperation on water security. Field data collection and analysis introduced them to technologies towards aquatic ecosystem damage prevention. The exploration of marine ecosystems and conservation measures highlighted the need for maintaining ecosystems and their biodiversity, especially in protecting fresh-water ecosystems from pollution.

Discussions also raised awareness of overfishing, the value of sustainable fisheries, and the importance of promoting conscious water usage in the wider community. By learning beyond the classroom and onto the shoreline, students were inspired to become advocates for ocean and water conservation.
